Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom Yes, You Should Show Freelance Work on Your Resume!

Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Yes, You Should Show Freelance Work on Your Resume! By 2030, nearly 50 percent of the American workforce will consist of contract employees. In other words, freelancers. Indeed, we’ve come a long way since a freelancer was a writer who wrote and edited corporate publications. Today, freelancers encompass nearly every role in every industry. Given this trend of legitimacy and the modern pace of career change, why would it be weird for a freelancer to pursue a full-time, more traditional opportunity? I don’t have the answer, but I do have a suggestion for how you can make your recent roster of freelance jobs make you appear less like an aimless job jumper and more like a serious-minded careerist. Create your company. When putting together your resume, come up with a name for your own company the way other self-employed individuals do. Mine, for instance, is Inspiration at Work, and I am the president and CEO. List your company as you would any other, and include quantifiable results from your key projects. These can be organized chronologically or by skillâ€"just be consistent. For the full post, check out the FlexJobs blog.

Hire A Resume And CV Writing Service

Hire A Resume And CV Writing ServiceThere are many companies offering excellent resume and CV writing services in the UK. These companies specialize in creating professional and well-structured resumes that appeal to recruiters and employers. While working with these professionals is often rewarding, there are some things you should keep in mind when you hire a professional resume and CV writer. The writers who work for these companies are English speakers. While they may not speak any other language, they should be able to speak English fluently. The company may send a document to a hiring manager that is so short that the writer did not even read it. Some agencies offer English-speaking personnel to work on contracts, but it is always a good idea to hire the best you can afford.Grammar is important in resumes and CV writing services. The documents must clearly state what the purpose of the document is, the purpose of the individual in the document, and other statements that should b e included. It is also important to know how long the resume should be. These companies usually have a sample resume available. All resumes should have a summary of the applicant's qualifications, as well as a statement of the specific job duties he or she has performed. The resume must not simply describe what the person has done. It should describe how it would benefit the organization or company to hire the applicant. The resumes should be well-organized and they should contain all of the necessary information about the candidate.Once the resumes are completed, they should be sent in electronic format, which allows recruiters to quickly download them and receive updated information about the job. The resumes should be professionally formatted and be free of spelling and grammatical errors. Careful proofreading and editing are important before the documents are submitted. When looking for a company that provides resume and CV writing services, make sure the agency is affiliated with the largest human resources companies in the UK. The company should have excellent relationships with the top staffing firms in the UK. It is easy to find resume and CV writing services, but it is important to make sure the company has a reputation of being reputable.Resume and CV writing services must also be able to provide a variety of CV formats. They should have a service that can send two to three formats of the same resume to the hiring manager. The company should have different samples of resume formats for the junior and senior level positions. A human resources firm will need to have a diverse client base to ensure that the firm is truly relevant.Resume and CV writing services are all the rage these days. Many small businesses and midsize corporations are outsourcing this process to these companies to eliminate the overhead of doing the work themselves. The most important aspect of choosing a resume and CV writing service is choosing a company that will meet your needs. T he writer should be able to meet your expectations and also be flexible enough to meet the needs of your business as well.

How 30 Superachievers Built Their Personal Brands - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How 30 Superachievers Built Their Personal Brands - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The Art of Doing, by Camille Sweeney and Josh Gosfield, is for you if youre looking for examples and tips for building your personal brand by becoming a superachiever in your field. The Art of Doing also offers you an excellent template for writing a book to build your personal brand, if your goal is to write and publish a book to promote your accomplishment. Subtitled, How Superachievers Do What They Do and How They Do It So Well, The Art of Doing is a worthy addition to the 2 other must read productivity books Ive recommended in previous Personal Branding Blog posts, The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, by Charles Duhigg Making Ideas Happen: Overcoming the Obstacles Between Vision and Reality, by Scott Belsky Stories of attainable superachievement The Art of Doing profiles 30 superachievers who have achieved significant success building their brands in a variety of fields. Youre likely to be familiar with some of the individuals profiled, such as Tony Hsieth from Zappos, Ken Jennings , the all-time Jeopardy! champion, or Guy Kawasaki, Apple business guru. But, what makes The Art of Doing special is that the authors avoided the cult of the obvious, and focused on fascinating stories of individuals who super-achieved their way to lasting personal brands in a variety of niches, such as: Philippe Petit, who walked across a wire strung between the 110-story World Trade Center towers. Gary Noesner, an FBI agent who has negotiated hundreds of life-and-death hostage crises. David Gang, who turned a tiny noodle shop into an international chain of restaurants. Will Shortz, New York Times crossword puzzle editor and over 100 crossword puzzle books Joseph Speare, an architect who has designed (or redesigned) more Major League Baseball parks than anyone else. Lynsey Addario, who became a celebrated Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer without benefit of professional training. The range of profiled individuals is what makes this book so crucially important to personal branding success: Few of us can realistically expect to become the next Richard Branson or Steve Jobs, but all of us can (and should) aspire to attaining similar success in our own fields! Format= stories and lessons The Art of Doings format is as important as the stories of the profiled individuals. Each chapter tells the story of a single individual, describing the individuals success and 10 lessons, or takeaways, from the story. Based on interviews, the stories are told in a pleasant, conversational tone. In addition, each chapter ends with a potpourri of specific facts about the specific individuals accomplishment, as well as facts relating to the general topic. For example, Chapter 7, How to Be Funny (On TV) based on interviews with Alec Baldwin and Robert Carlock, ends with Facts about 30 Rock, as well as general TV sitcom facts   about TV sitcoms in general. The format, with its 6-8 page chapters, lends itself to comfortable, reading. Each chapter is organized around an accomplishment, introduced by How titles like How to Be a Diva, How to Be a Dog Whisperer, How to Make It as a Rock Band in the Digital Era, or How to Win the Indy 500. You can learn more about the 30 individuals profiled in The Art of Doing by visiting the authors www.theartofdoing.com website and viewing the Whos Who in the Art of Doing page. Mastering the qualities of doing So, what really separates the best from the rest? Youll gain a new understanding of success after reading the 30 stories, and the 10 takeaways and tips at the end of each chapter. But, if youre in a hurry, you can go directly to How to Be a Super-Achiever: The 10 Qualities that Matter, an article and video based on a Forbes interview with the authors. All the non-policing jobs a policing graduate job could lead to - Debut

All the non-policing jobs a policing graduate job could lead to - Debut This article was written in collaboration with Police Now. Explore exclusive graduate and undergraduate opportunities at Police Now by downloading the Debut app. Youve probably never considered a policing graduate job if youre as diametrically opposed to fresh air and exercise as I am. Thats why Im writing this from my nice, safe desk in lavish Debut HQ. But it doesnt have to be like this for you. If you want a job thats challenging, different every day and helps your community, being an officer on the Police Now programme can provide you with just that. And if you dont want to remain in the police afterwards, it sets up you up quite nicely for pretty much anything else. We talked to Police Now to find out where a policing graduate job can take you after youre done. Law How many would-be lawyers out there can say that theyve actually got their hands dirty and enforced the law? A bit of face-to-face involvement will give you a better understanding of the needs and challenges of law enforcement as well as the impact it has on the public. Police Now says:  Working in collaboration with other public service institutions, Police Now participants will see for themselves the intricate balance between proposed legislation and its practicality and enforceability. Business What skills do you need as an entrepreneur? Well, decision-making in intense situations is crucial. As is leading people in difficult circumstances. Negotiating under pressure? Communicating with people who dont want to listen? Absolutely. Heres the kicker: those are all things you learn while policing. Oftentimes, in situations with much higher stakes. After youve done that for two years, theres nothing the business world can throw at you that you wont be ready for. Police Now says:  From dealing with child custody cases with abusive parents at 2am; de-escalating a domestic violence situation; to working a shift twice as long as it should have been, you will gain an incredible wealth of skills that can be applied to other situations. Banking Forget the mechanics of it all for a sec. When you work in banking, therell be plenty of times where you need to keep a cool head, make good judgements and work long hours. Theres no better field to prepare you for that than policing. Police Now says: “Police Now participants learn essential skills in negotiation, decision-making, emotional intelligence, resilience and leadership. These skills are transferable to any profession and prized by organisations in many sectors.” Politics Think youd make a difference in the Home Office? Police Now partners with them directly. Working in the communities you actively hope to improve will give you a much-needed leg-up on all the career politicians out there. Whether as a police officer or a politician, youre working as a public servant. Therefore, a close understanding of the people youre working for is vital if you wanna be the next Prime Minister. Police Now says:   We have around 15 secondments with the Home Office this year. We also work with DEFRA. The softer skills developed through the scheme should not be underestimated â€" resilience, emotional intelligence and courage are incredibly valuable skills in all work places. Consulting Policing requires a huge amount of knowledge. But its not just about that. Its about applying that knowledge to make a given situation better. That pretty much hits what consultants do right on the nose. They use the benefit of their knowledge to help businesses be the best they can be. Police Now says: Obviously, our pals at Police Now see the similarities too. Theyve got a bunch of partnerships with the worlds biggest firms working in consultancy. They tell us, We are currently working with Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, and PA Consulting. Thats quite a list. Charity work The most important part of policing is giving back to the community. If youve ever considered dedicating your life to improve the lives of those less fortunate, consider doing so with a policing grad scheme like Police Now. They do more than enforce the law. They look at the root problems causing crime and deprivation in communities and work alongside them to make a difference. Police Now says:  The focus of Police Now participants work is to make a disproportionate positive impact in neighbourhoods. We have secondments with The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) which was established as an independent think-tank in 2004 to put social justice at the heart of British politics and make policy recommendations to tackle the root causes of poverty.  Police Now is committed to public service in one of Britains toughest jobs to increase life chances for people from deprived backgrounds. Well said, guys, well said. Connect with Debut on Facebook and Twitter

Tips for Participating in Online Networking - Hallie Crawford

Tips for Participating in Online Networking If you are unsure how to get involved in online networking groups, here are a few tips to get you started: Join networks that contain a cross-representation of related professionals. Lets say youre a web designer by trade. Your ideal networking group might consist of entrepreneurs from a variety of fields: copywriters, virtual assistants, and computer experts. This way youre not competing with a group of other people who do the exact same thing as you. Instead, youre making contact with people who may one day need your service, or recommend you to their associates. Think team-building potential! Participate on a regular basis. Many of our career coaching clients say that they benefit most from groups in which participation requires them to put forth the biggest effort. Meaning, they log in on a regular basis (once a week or more), take the time to craft thoughtful responses, and ask lots of questions. Asking questions not only helps to broaden your own knowledge, but it gives others the opportunity to share what they know. Your curiosity and genuine interest in others will help you to be remembered later. You may encounter something surprising or quite different in some online career forums. Some participants may get hot-headed when expressing their opinions. Make up your mind to steer clear of conversations that are negative or unproductive for you. Remain pleasant and professional toward everyone, all the while offering your help and honest insight whenever you can. If you feel ready to take your online networking efforts to the next level, then make up your mind to be a giver. Volunteer your time and/or your professional assistance. Networks such as www.ryze.com are always in need of group moderators. Being a network leader can be hard work, but the end resultâ€"high quality contacts and real relationships with terrific professionals like youâ€" is well worth the effort. If you dont feel like leading, you can always offer your services or expertise to other members of the group who may need them. This is a terrific portfolio and credibility builder. And dont forget to write letters of recommendation or give testimonials to those people who help you. You may also want to consider doing some volunteer work in your specific field to meet contacts, which is another way to get your name out there and keep your skills honed at the same time. Dont be afraid to toot your own horn! Many job searchers, especially women, are taught at a young age to be modest, humble, and unassuming. But when a woman is trying to get her foot in the career door, this self-effacing behavior can work against her. Regardless of gender, career networking is a time to market yourself and your abilities. Whether you are searching for full-time work, want to begin freelancing and develop your own website, or are planning to launch your own business, online career networking is the place to share great things about yourself and what you do. We hope this is helpful to you! The career coaches at HallieCrawford.com. Schedule a free consult with HallieCrawford.com today
